5 ways Zinc balances periods + clears your skin
Many women will put up with irregular or painful periods but everyone wants to have nice skin. Persistent spots or acne can be seriously demoralising.
I used to have terrible skin so I know how it feels. One of my first ever clients came to me with acne after years on antibiotics and the pill. By the time we finished working together, her skin was completely clear.
Persistent acne is commonly caused by excess keratin and sebum, related to excess androgens (male hormones) or insufficient oestrogen. Often acne is worse after stopping taking the pill which can be very stressful.
The pill and other forms of hormonal birth control encourage the body to retain copper and this can hinder the absorption of zinc.

5 benefits of Zinc for healthy skin and periods
- It blocks excess androgens. Androgens are sometimes described as ‘male hormones’ – we need some, but not too much. Zinc regulates testosterone production. Too much can be a cause of acne and even facial hair.
- It clears the skin. In addition to blocking excess androgens, it is antibacterial and reduces the production of keratin (a cause of blocked pores).
- It helps regulate your periods. Zinc nourishes ovarian follicles and promotes ovulation. Regular ovulation is the one guarantee that you have a good balance of oestrogen and progesterone, and this helps control sebum production. Your eggs take 100 days to grow, so you need to be patient.
- It calms down cortisol. Zinc is essential for the healthy functioning of the brain, especially the part that controls our adrenal response. When we’re running low in natural reserves of cortisol our body steals our progesterone to replace it. When we are low in progesterone it also shows up in heavy, irregular periods, crazy PMS and hormonal acne.
- Zinc is anti-inflammatory. Zinc has powerful anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce acne and period pain.
Do you need zinc?
Zinc is not stored in the body so it needs to be eaten or supplemented regularly. Red meat and oysters are the most reliable sources of zinc.
Cayenne, parsley and pumpkin seeds are three of the best vegetarian food sources of zinc.
Causes of deficiency include:
- A history of hormonal birth control
- Underactive thyroid
- A vegetarian diet
- Antacid medication
Signs of deficiency include:
- Irregular periods
- Low immunity
- Hair loss

I prefer natural food supplements wherever possible as they are most easily recognised and absorbed by the body.
