9 ways to boost your energy in winter

Most of us have a dip in energy at this time of year.

This is partly due to the shorter daylight hours and an increase in melatonin which makes us feel tired.

A lack of sunlight also means we are low in Vitamin D.

We can obtain useful amounts of Vitamin D from certain foods but sunlight is the main source, which is why we should all be taking a supplement.

We also want to focus on foods that give us the nutrients we need, as over time this will help us build a strong metabolism and emotional resilience.

9 ways to boost your energy in winter

Focus on nourishing foods and balancing routines

  1. Protein at every meal
The first meal of the day is especially important – eggs, almond butter, nuts, seeds or yoghurt are all good sources.
  2. Increase Omega 3
Omega 3 can be found in oily fish, flax seeds and walnuts, and is naturally anti-inflammatory.
  3. Balance blood sugar
Avoid sugar spikes and dips by eating greens, proteins and low-carb foods before you have anything sweet.
  4. Eat till you’re full
Meals with a good balance of protein, high-fibre carbs and vegetables will keep you fuller for longer.
  5. Support your liver
Broccoli, kale, cauliflower, spinach, avocado, leeks, onion and garlic support liver function which also helps with hormonal balance. [Related post]
  6. Avoid quick sugar hits
Fizzy drinks, biscuits, milk chocolate and energy bars are all high in sugar and will make you more tired afterwards – try unsalted nuts and fruit instead.
  7. Move every day
We move far less in winter, so consciously aim to walk and move around as much as possible – it doesn’t have to be the gym or a class to count.
  8. Drink plenty of water
We drink less water in winter, and with the heating on can easily become dehydrated – try to keep track and go for 1.5 – 2 litres every day.
  9. Prioritise sleep
The less sleep we have the more we are at risk of low mood and exhaustion – if you find it hard to relax and wind down adaptogen herbs can help.

Hopefully, these are some good reminders of ways to boost your energy naturally in winter.

  • I saw Tracy for perimenopause and urinary tract issues and I feel so much better. My energy levels have transformed, my hormones are way more stable and my UTI issues have gone completely.

  • Tracy helped me realise my body wasn’t being abnormal, but prioritising healing itself after a decade of contraceptives. I feel healthier, detoxed, and more connected to myself than ever in my life (and my skin looks fantastic).
