3 ways I’m trying to slow down

It’s early Sunday morning, the day after my birthday and everyone else is asleep.

Another year has tip-toed quietly by.

I had a lovely birthday yesterday. I spent time with my family and I was pampered with chocolate, flowers, thoughtful messages and gifts. I also thought about my mum.

Anyway, this morning I’m undeniably a year older.

That’s ok.

Most people think I’m younger than I actually am which is a nice compliment. I find myself deflecting it, which I know  I shouldn’t, but I do.

I’m thinking about how things have changed for me this last year. It’s been an interesting one as I’ve challenged myself in different ways and I’ve learned new things about myself too.

If there’s a theme for the past year that I want to carry over into the year ahead, it’s living more slowly. If you know me in real life, you might be wondering if I’m kidding! (I pack a lot into my life, for sure.)

Yet, inside of my outwardly busy life, I am always looking for ways to slow down. I appreciate the rhythm of life and I like to keep it simple when I can.

3 ways I’m trying to slow down

I like to think that while I might not be getting younger, hopefully, I’m wiser. That means I need to take more care of myself more than ever before.

  1. Sleep gives me energy

I’ve learned more about sleep so I can help my clients, I’ve made changes to my own sleep too. I get at least one early night every week and I’m going to bed earlier generally so I get my seven and a half hours. Good sleep habits might seem impossible when you’re busy, but my bed-time ritual makes a difference to my energy and skin, which I care about more than getting a few more things off my to-do list.

  2. Yoga helps me relax

I spend far too much time sitting down and if I don’t make time for yoga I feel like I’m seizing up. I have a yoga mat at home and the last few months I’ve taken classes at Yoga Place every week. I invested in a class pass to make it easier to book. All I have to do is show up.

  3. Journals help me reflect

I started to use a daily journal 5 months ago and it’s changed my life. It gives me time to reflect and make good decisions. I also find myself expressing thanks for many small things that otherwise I could easily take for granted.

Simple things make a big difference

Sleep, yoga, and journaling. Is that it?

I can’t pretend it’s always easy to make time for myself, or that I’ve got this completely sorted, but I’m always working on it.

Sleep, journaling, and yoga all make a big difference in how I look and feel.

  • An extra hour in bed gives me more energy.
  • An hour of yoga improves my posture and helps me feel calm and relaxed.
  • Taking time to complete my journal twice a day takes the least amount of time but is probably the ‘keystone habit’ of the three.

Now it’s your turn

What are the habits that help you slow down so you can take more care of yourself?
